The Old Man of Storr, at 40 meters high, is one of many ancient volcanic plugs atop a rocky hill on the Trotternish peninsula of the Isle of Skye. This shot, across Loch Leathen, shows the immensity of the land. The crates are for harvesting peat, the brown, decaying vegetable matter in the center front. Peat, formed since the Ice Age in marshy lands, is burned here and elsewhere for heating and cooking.

Sally Ross retired from the University of Georgia Department of Language and Literacy, after many wonderful years of working with Georgia English teachers. She now thrives on travel, hiking, golf, and photography, making Scotland the perfect destination for several months every summer.
