The Roman gateway through the main walls of Portovenere, Italy, was built in 1160 AD. It leads to one main street of the city, the one back from the busy harbor, but usually filled with visitors to its many shops and vendors. This day, in torrential rains, the few people out were huddling home, passing ancient stonework, worn but still colorful and rain-shiny.

Sally Ross retired from the University of Georgia Department of Language and Literacy, after many wonderful years of working with Georgia English teachers. She now thrives on travel, hiking, golf, and photography, making Scotland the perfect destination for several months every summer.
