Description
Dawn in Istanbul, and the sun was rising to the right of this picture. Thus the clouds are sunlit but the marvelous foreground of the Hagia Sophia is still shaded by night. Built in 537, it has served as a Greek Orthodox cathedral (twice), Roman Catholic Cathedral, Imperial Mosque, and finally, since 1935, a museum. Famous for it’s massive dome, it was the world’s largest cathedral for 1000 years. At the opposite end of this gorgeous plaza stands the stunning, active Blue Mosque.
